The .357 Magnum was designed over a period of time in the early to mid-1930s as a direct reaction to Colt's .38 Super Automatic. The .38 Super was the only American pistol cartridge capable of overcoming automotive cover and the early bulletproof vests that were just starting to appear during the Interwar era at the time. Those vests were shown to be effective against any pistol bullet moving less than 1,000 feet per second in tests conducted at the time. Colt's .38 Super Automatic narrowly nudged above that velocity, allowing it to breach vehicle doors and vests used as cover by bootleggers and criminals.

Though the bullet diameters of the .38 Special and.357 Magnum appear to be different, they are equal at 0.357 inches. The .38 Special designation refers to the employment of heeled bullets with the same diameter as the case (such as the .38 Short Colt and .38 Long Colt). The only exterior dimensions difference between 38 Special and the 357 Magnum revolvers is the case length; this was done to avoid unintentionally loading a .357 Mag cartridge into a .38 Spl revolver that wasn't suited for the .357 magnum's greater chamber pressure. Also, Because the.38 Special cartridge was initially a black powder cartridge and the .357 Magnum was designed using only considerably denser smokeless powder, case capacity was not a factor in the increase in case length.

Many people consider this cartridge to be a superb hunting, self-defense, and metallic silhouette round. It can also be successful against huge or hazardous animals, such as bears and ungulates, with the right loadings; nevertheless, many people prefer the larger and more powerful magnum cartridges. In comparison to the bigger magnum revolver loadings, the.357 Magnum has less energy but is smaller in diameter and has a high velocity, allowing for exceptional penetrating qualities. It's an excellent small- and medium-game round that may be used to hunt deer at acceptable ranges if properly loaded by a skilled marksman.

To put it another way, 357 Mag has a higher muzzle velocity at 100 yards than 38 Special. The .357 Magnum has a comparable effect on game as the .45 Colt, but it has a flatter trajectory because of its higher velocity. It's been used for self-defense, plinking, hunting, and target shooting with great success.
