The 308 Winchester cartridge was developed in 1952 by Winchester. Originally created as a hunting caliber, 308 Win was later redeveloped as 7.62x51mm for military use.

While the terms tend to be used interchangeably, 308 Winchester and 7.62×51 ammo are physically very similar, but are technically two different loads. While you can shoot 7.62x51mm ammo in a firearm chambered for 308 Win, it’s not recommended you fire 308 ammo in a 7.62×51 rifle.

The reason is that the 308 Winchester round is loaded to deliver higher pressure when fired. This higher pressure can damage a gun chambered for 7.62×51.

Thanks to its military history and heavy use in hunting, the 308 caliber is one of the most popular ammo calibers in the US.

This is a great round for hunting medium and large-sized game like deer and elk.
