Overview of 10mm Auto Ammo
Developed by Jeff Cooper and introduced in 1983, 10mm Auto is the most powerful semi-automatic pistol cartridge in widespread civilian production. It fires a .400-inch diameter bullet in weights from 135 to 220 grains at muzzle velocities of 1,200-1,600 fps from a full-size pistol, producing 600-800 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That puts full-power 10mm loads in genuine .357 Magnum territory from a semi-automatic platform, making it uniquely capable for handgun hunting, bear country carry, and serious defensive use.
10mm Auto has experienced a significant revival since the mid-2010s as new platforms from Glock, Colt, Springfield Armory, and others brought the cartridge to a new generation of shooters. Ammunition availability has improved dramatically alongside platform availability, and 10mm is now stocked by all major manufacturers. One important note: some 10mm pistols, particularly older models, may have been originally test-fired with downloaded "FBI loads" that were not representative of full-power 10mm performance. Modern factory loads from quality manufacturers run at full SAAMI specifications and deliver the cartridge's actual capability.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 10mm Auto good for bear defense?
Yes, with appropriate ammunition. For bear defense, hard-cast flat-nose loads from Buffalo Bore or Underwood in the 200-220gr range prioritize maximum penetration over expansion, which is needed to reach vitals on a large bear from a frontal angle. Standard JHP loads, while effective on deer and hogs, may not penetrate deeply enough for reliable performance on a charging brown bear or grizzly. A full-power 10mm with hard-cast or bonded ammunition is considered one of the most practical semi-automatic bear defense options available, particularly in the .357 Magnum-class energy range from a high-capacity platform.
What is the difference between 10mm Auto and .40 S&W?
.40 S&W was derived from a shortened, downloaded 10mm Auto case and fires the same .400-inch bullet at significantly lower velocity. Full-power 10mm produces roughly 600-800 ft-lbs of muzzle energy compared to 400-500 ft-lbs for .40 S&W. The two cartridges are not interchangeable. 10mm requires a longer grip frame and stronger action than .40 S&W, which is why they are chambered in different pistols despite sharing bullet diameter.
What pistols are chambered in 10mm Auto?
Common production pistols include the Glock 20 and 29, Colt Delta Elite, Springfield Armory XD-M and 1911 TRP, Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0, Sig Sauer P220 Legion, EAA Witness, and Kimber Camp Guard. The Glock 20 is the most widely owned 10mm pistol due to its reliability, 15-round capacity, and broad aftermarket support. Several 1911-platform pistols are chambered in 10mm for shooters who prefer a single-action trigger.
More About 10mm Auto Ammo
10mm Auto was conceived by Jeff Cooper, the firearms instructor and philosopher who founded the American Pistol Institute at Gunsite Ranch in Arizona. Cooper believed that the 9mm and .45 ACP were both compromised choices for a serious combat handgun cartridge, and worked with ammunition designer Whit Collins and Dornaus and Dixon Enterprises to develop a cartridge that would deliver superior terminal performance from a semi-automatic pistol. The result was the 10mm Auto, introduced in 1983 alongside the Bren Ten pistol.
The FBI adopted 10mm Auto in 1989 following the 1986 Miami shootout, equipping agents with Smith and Wesson Model 1076 pistols. However, the combination of heavy recoil and a large grip frame proved difficult for some agents to manage effectively, and the FBI worked with Winchester to develop a downloaded "FBI load" that reduced recoil. This reduced load used so little of the 10mm case capacity that Smith and Wesson and Winchester realized the same ballistics could be achieved in a shorter case compatible with a standard-size pistol frame, which led directly to the development of .40 S&W in 1990. The FBI transitioned to .40 S&W shortly after, effectively abandoning the cartridge it had championed.
10mm Auto survived in the civilian market through a dedicated following of hunters, handgun competitors in IPSC Open division, and shooters who appreciated the cartridge's genuine performance capability. The revival beginning around 2015 was driven by Glock's sustained production of the Glock 20, expanded platform availability from other manufacturers, and a growing interest in 10mm as a bear country carry option in Alaska and the American West. Today 10mm Auto is better supported by ammunition manufacturers and more widely available in production pistols than at any point since its introduction, and its reputation as the most capable semi-automatic pistol cartridge for serious field use is well established.
