Overview of Remington Ammunition
Founded in 1816, Remington is the oldest continuously operating firearms and ammunition manufacturer in the United States. The Remington name spans three distinct product lines that most shooters encounter: UMC for affordable brass-case range training, Core-Lokt for hunting, and Golden Saber for defensive carry. Core-Lokt in particular holds a unique distinction as the best-selling centerfire hunting load in American history, trusted by generations of deer and elk hunters since its introduction in 1939.
Remington Ammunition was separated from the firearms business following Remington's 2020 bankruptcy and is now operated independently. Production continues at the Lonoke, Arkansas facility where Remington ammunition has been manufactured since 1969, and quality standards have been maintained across all major product lines.
Popular Remington Ammo by Product Line
- Remington UMC: The go-to range and training line. Boxer-primed brass cases, clean-burning propellants, and reliable feeding in handgun and rifle calibers. Popular UMC loads include 9mm 115gr FMJ, .38 Special 130gr FMJ, and .45 ACP 230gr FMJ in bulk quantities.
- Remington Core-Lokt: The best-selling centerfire hunting ammunition in history. The tapered copper jacket locked to a solid lead core delivers consistent 2X expansion and 95% weight retention on deer, elk, and bear. Available in soft point and pointed soft point across virtually every hunting caliber including 30-30 Win 170gr SP, 30-06 Springfield 150gr SP, and 30-06 Springfield 220gr SP.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Remington ammo still good quality after the bankruptcy?
Yes. Remington Ammunition was purchased by Czechoslovak Group following Remington's 2020 bankruptcy and continues to be manufactured at the original Lonoke, Arkansas facility. The UMC, Core-Lokt, and Golden Saber lines remain in active production with quality standards consistent with pre-bankruptcy output. Core-Lokt continues to be one of the most widely sold hunting loads in the United States. What is Remington Core-Lokt and why is it so popular?
Introduced in 1939, Core-Lokt is the best-selling centerfire hunting ammunition in American history. Its tapered copper jacket is mechanically locked to a solid lead core, delivering consistent 2X expansion and approximately 95% weight retention on impact. That combination of controlled expansion and deep penetration has made it a trusted load for deer, elk, and bear across generations of hunters. Available in soft point and pointed soft point configurations across virtually every major hunting caliber, including 30-30 Win and 30-06 Springfield.
What is the difference between Remington UMC and Core-Lokt?
Remington UMC is a range and training line loaded with FMJ bullets for high-volume practice at a low cost per round. Core-Lokt is a hunting line loaded with soft point bullets designed for controlled expansion on game. Use UMC for the range, Core-Lokt in the field. For defensive carry, Remington Golden Saber JHP is the appropriate choice. Browse our 9mm ammo and .38 Special ammo pages for Remington UMC availability in handgun calibers.
More About Remington Ammunition
Remington's ammunition history begins in 1816 when Eliphalet Remington forged his first rifle barrel by hand in Ilion, New York. The Union Metallic Cartridge Company, which would eventually become the UMC product line, was founded separately in 1867 and merged with Remington Arms in 1912 to form Remington Arms-UMC, creating one of the most vertically integrated firearms and ammunition businesses in the world at the time.
Through the 20th century, Remington supplied ammunition to the U.S. military through both World Wars and became the largest ammunition manufacturer in North America. The Core-Lokt hunting bullet, introduced in 1939, became the defining product of Remington's civilian ammunition business and remains in production today with essentially the same design principles that made it successful nearly 90 years ago.
Remington Arms filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020, and the ammunition business was subsequently acquired by Czechoslovak Group, a Czech defense and industrial conglomerate. Production moved forward at the Lonoke, Arkansas facility, which has been Remington's primary ammunition manufacturing site since 1969. The separation of the ammunition and firearms businesses means Remington Ammunition and Remington Firearms (now operated by RemArms) are distinct companies sharing a brand name but operating independently.
For American hunters and shooters, the practical takeaway is straightforward: Remington UMC remains a reliable and affordable brass-case range option, Core-Lokt remains the most proven centerfire hunting load on the market, and the Lonoke facility continues to produce both at the same standards that built the brand's reputation over more than a century.
