This load uses a 45 grain soft point bullet with an exposed lead tip. The soft nose starts expanding as soon as it hits, which transfers energy quickly on groundhogs, rabbits, foxes, and other small game and varmints. Soft points also break up more readily than solid bullets, which helps reduce ricochets in open fields. The 45 grain weight is the classic Hornet bullet, so it stabilizes well in the slower rifling twist common in older and European rifles. Sellier & Bellot rates this load at 2,346 fps and 550 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That is plenty for small game and predators at moderate range, with very little noise or recoil.

The 22 Hornet dates back to the 1930s and was one of the first commercial small-caliber centerfire varmint cartridges. It is quiet, has almost no recoil, and is easy on barrels, which makes it ideal for farm pest control and small predators out to about 200 yards. It is chambered in rifles like the CZ 527, Ruger 77/22 Hornet, Savage Model 25, Mossberg, and many break-action and single-shot guns, including the Thompson/Center Contender and Encore.
