Overview of 6.8 SPC Ammo

6.8 Remington SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge) was designed to give the AR-15 more energy than 5.56 NATO at close to medium range. It fires a .277-inch bullet, usually 90 to 120 grains, at around 2,500 to 2,800 fps. That makes it a strong AR-15 deer and hog cartridge out to about 300 yards, with mild recoil and more terminal performance than 5.56.

A 6.8 SPC AR-15 uses a standard lower receiver but needs a dedicated barrel, bolt, and 6.8 magazines. Some rifles are chambered in 6.8 SPC II, which handles both SAAMI 6.8 SPC and higher-pressure loads. For other AR-15 hunting options, see our 6.5 Grendel ammo and 350 Legend ammo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 6.8 SPC and 6.8 SPC II?

6.8 SPC II is a chamber specification, not a different cartridge. It uses a slightly longer leade so the rifle can safely handle higher-pressure loads. All factory 6.8 SPC ammunition is safe in a 6.8 SPC II chamber.

Is 6.8 SPC good for deer hunting?

Yes. 6.8 SPC carries substantially more energy than 5.56 and is effective on deer and hogs out to about 300 yards with a hunting bullet like Winchester Deer Season XP or Hornady CX. Check your state's hunting regulations before hunting.

Is 6.8 SPC the same as 6.8x51 or .277 Fury?

No. The Army's 6.8x51mm, also called .277 SIG Fury, is a much larger, high-pressure rifle cartridge. 6.8 SPC is a smaller AR-15 cartridge. They are not interchangeable.

More About 6.8 SPC Ammo

6.8 SPC was developed in the early 2000s by members of U.S. Army Special Forces working with the Army Marksmanship Unit and Remington. Their goal was a cartridge that fit the M4 platform but delivered better terminal performance than 5.56 at close and medium range.

Remington brought the cartridge to market in 2004, and SAAMI standardized it soon after. While the military never adopted it widely, 6.8 SPC found a loyal following among AR-15 hunters who want a deer-capable round with light recoil in a standard-size rifle.
