Need a dependable hunting load for your Lee-Enfield that won’t break the bank? Grab this 200 round case of PPU PP303S1 303 British 150 grain soft point ammo from Prvi Partizan. It is a flatter-shooting alternative to the traditional 174 and 180 grain 303 loads.
This load uses a 150 grain soft point boat tail bullet. The exposed lead tip starts expansion quickly on impact, while the copper jacket helps the bullet hold together for penetration through the vitals. The boat tail base reduces drag, so the bullet holds its line and its velocity better at longer ranges. PPU lists a muzzle velocity of 2,690 fps, which is more than 200 fps faster than most 180 grain 303 British loads. That extra speed flattens the trajectory, which makes range estimation less critical on deer, pronghorn, and hogs in open country. The lighter bullet also produces noticeably less recoil, a welcome change in a steel-buttplate military rifle.
Prvi Partizan has built ammunition in Serbia since 1928 and is one of the few companies still loading the 303 British in volume. The 303 British served as the British and Commonwealth service cartridge from 1889 into the 1950s, and it is chambered in the No. 1 Mk III SMLE, No. 4, No. 5 Jungle Carbine, Australian Lithgow rifles, and many sporterized Enfields. Keep in mind that lighter bullets may print lower than your military sights expect, so confirm your zero before you hunt. Since you should practice with the same ammo you hunt with, a full 200 round case lets you sight in, practice field positions, and still have plenty left for deer season. If you prefer a heavier bullet for elk or bear, compare it with the 180 grain PP303S2 load.
This imported ammo is new production, brass-cased, Boxer-primed, and non-corrosive. The fired brass is reloadable, which is a big plus for a cartridge with limited new brass supply. Each box holds 20 rounds, and ten boxes make up this 200 round case.
