Federal American Eagle AE223 is one of the most common AR-15 range loads in America, made on the same lines as Federal’s premium rifle ammunition. This listing is Federal American Eagle 223 Remington 55 grain full metal jacket boat tail ammo, MPN AE223, sold as a 500 round case.
The 55 grain FMJ boat tail bullet is the standard weight for 223 practice. The boat tail base helps the bullet hold velocity downrange, and it shoots well from the 1:7, 1:8, and 1:9 twist barrels found on most AR-15 rifles. Federal rates this load at 3,240 fps with 1,282 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. A full metal jacket bullet does not expand reliably, so this is ammunition for target practice, steel, training courses, and zeroing rather than hunting or self defense.
This ammunition fits rifles and pistols chambered in 223 Remington, including AR-15 platform rifles, the Ruger Mini-14 and American Ranch, Springfield Saint, Smith and Wesson M&P15, Sig MCX, IWI Tavor, and bolt actions chambered in 223. A common question is whether 223 can be fired in a 5.56 rifle. Yes. A rifle chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, or a 223 Wylde chamber, safely fires 223 Remington. The reverse is not recommended: 5.56 NATO runs at higher pressure, so do not fire 5.56 in a rifle marked only 223 Remington. Another common question is whether 223 and 5.56 shoot to the same point of impact. They are usually close at typical range distances, but confirm your zero when you switch loads.
Federal AE223 is new production ammunition, not reloads, made in the USA. Each round uses a brass case with a boxer primer and is non-corrosive, so the brass is reloadable. This case comes in factory packaging as 25 boxes of 20 rounds for a total of 500 rounds of 223 Rem 55 grain FMJ-BT. Buying by the case keeps you on one production lot so your zero holds from box to box.
