Overview of 300 Blackout Ammo

300 AAC Blackout was developed by Advanced Armament Corporation and Remington Defense around 2010 and standardized by SAAMI in 2011. The design goal was specific: deliver 7.62x39mm-class terminal performance from a standard AR-15 lower receiver, requiring only a barrel change and no modification to the bolt, magazine, or lower. For suppressed use, the cartridge was designed to cycle reliably with subsonic loads at 220gr, producing hearing-safe sound levels from a suppressed rifle without the supersonic crack that limits other cartridges at similar weights.

300 Blackout fires a .308-inch diameter bullet in weights from 110gr supersonic varmint loads up to 220gr subsonic loads. The two primary use cases are distinct enough that most shooters effectively run two different cartridges from the same platform. Supersonic 110-125gr loads achieve 2,200-2,400 fps with terminal performance suitable for deer, hogs, and predators. Subsonic 200-220gr loads run at 1,000-1,050 fps and are specifically optimized for suppressed use, producing dramatic sound reduction with an effective range of approximately 100-150 yards. For a direct comparison with 5.56, see our 300 Blackout vs 5.56 guide.

Critical safety note: 300 Blackout cartridges physically fit in a 5.56 NATO chamber and will fire, but doing so creates a dangerous out-of-battery condition that can destroy the rifle and injure the shooter. Never mix 300 Blackout and 5.56 NATO ammunition. Label your magazines clearly and store them separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can 300 Blackout be fired in a 5.56 NATO rifle?

No, and this is one of the most serious safety warnings in the AR-15 world. 300 Blackout cartridges physically fit in a 5.56 NATO chamber and will fire, but doing so creates a dangerous out-of-battery condition that can destroy the rifle and seriously injure the shooter. The only external difference between the two cartridges is the case neck, which is not visible when seated in a magazine. Always store 300 Blackout and 5.56 magazines separately and label them clearly. For a full comparison of the two calibers, see our 300 Blackout vs 5.56 guide.

What is the difference between supersonic and subsonic 300 Blackout?

Supersonic loads, typically 110-125gr at 2,200-2,400 fps, are optimized for hunting and general use. They cycle reliably without a suppressor and deliver terminal performance suitable for deer and hogs inside 200 yards. Subsonic loads, typically 200-220gr at 1,000-1,050 fps, are designed for suppressed use. They stay below the speed of sound so there is no supersonic crack, producing dramatically quieter reports. The Federal 220gr OTM Subsonic is the most popular suppressor-optimized load we carry.

Is 300 Blackout good for deer hunting?

Yes, with supersonic loads and realistic range expectations. A 110-125gr expanding bullet delivers adequate energy for clean kills on deer inside 150-200 yards. 300 Blackout is legal for deer in most states. For subsonic loads, lower energy makes shots beyond 100 yards marginal for ethical kills on deer-sized game. The PPU 125gr HPBT is a practical and affordable hunting option. Always verify your state's regulations before hunting deer with 300 Blackout. Browse our rifle ammo selection for additional hunting calibers.

More About 300 Blackout Ammo

300 AAC Blackout originated from a U.S. Special Operations Command requirement for a cartridge that could deliver significantly more terminal performance than 5.56 NATO at close range while using the same AR-15 bolt, lower receiver, and magazines. The existing solution, the .300 Whisper developed by J.D. Jones at SSK Industries in the 1990s, was close to what SOCOM needed but was not standardized for military use. Advanced Armament Corporation worked with Remington Defense to standardize the design, submitting it to SAAMI for approval in 2011 as the 300 AAC Blackout.

The engineering achievement is the cartridge's bolt and magazine compatibility. By necking up a 5.56 case to accept a .30-caliber bullet, the designers produced a cartridge with the same case head dimensions and overall length as 5.56 NATO. This means a 300 Blackout AR-15 requires only a barrel change from a 5.56 configuration. The bolt, bolt carrier group, lower receiver, trigger group, and magazines all remain identical. The practical result is that any shooter with a 5.56 AR-15 can convert to 300 Blackout for approximately the cost of a barrel swap.

The cartridge's dual-role capability, supersonic for hunting and general use and subsonic for suppressed CQB applications, drove significant civilian adoption through the 2010s as suppressor ownership expanded. Today 300 Blackout is one of the most widely chambered AR-15 calibers in the market, supported by a broad range of factory ammunition from most major manufacturers and a large aftermarket of barrels, suppressors, and support equipment.
