Heavier 62 grain 223 ammo carries better in the wind than 55 grain loads, and Federal’s AE223N offers that weight without the steel penetrator found in M855. This listing is Federal American Eagle 223 Remington 62 grain full metal jacket boat tail ammo, MPN AE223N, sold as a 500 round case.
Federal rates this load at 3,020 fps with 1,255 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The 62 grain FMJ boat tail bullet has a lead core and a copper jacket with no steel insert, so it is welcome at most ranges that ban green tip or steel core ammunition and it is easier on steel targets. The heavier bullet holds velocity and resists wind drift better than 55 grain bullets at longer distances, and it shoots best from 1:7, 1:8, and 1:9 twist barrels. A full metal jacket bullet does not expand reliably, so this is practice and training ammunition rather than a hunting load.
This ammunition fits rifles chambered in 223 Remington, 5.56 NATO, or 223 Wylde, including AR-15 rifles and pistols, the Ruger Mini-14, Smith and Wesson M&P15, Springfield Saint, Sig MCX, and bolt action rifles chambered in 223. A common question is whether AE223N is the same as M855. It is not. M855 has a steel penetrator and a green tip, while AE223N is a plain lead core FMJ of similar weight. Another common question is whether 62 grain stabilizes in a 1:12 twist barrel. Many older 1:12 barrels shoot 62 grain bullets poorly, so 55 grain ammo is a better match there.
Federal AE223N is new production ammunition, not reloads, made in the USA. Each round uses a reloadable brass case with a boxer primer and is non-corrosive. This case comes in factory packaging as 25 boxes of 20 rounds for a total of 500 rounds of 223 Rem 62 grain FMJ-BT. Buying by the case keeps you on one production lot so your zero stays consistent from box to box.

Federal ammo is always good stuff. I find the 62 gr gives me better groups from my 12.5″ barrel with 1:7 twist. Fast shipping and discreet over-boxing so nosey neighbors cant tell what the UPS guy is dropping off.

The 62gr work fantastic in my 16in LaRue barrel carbine length but will not cycle the next round in either of my 13.7in barrels. One being the Rosco MFG mid length and and the other Ballistic Advantage carbine length.

Haven’t been to the range yet with this ammo, but the 5 stars is for the customer service. Even when I messed up the shipping address of the FFL (in CA) they fixed it no charge and it arrived quickly.

I was skeptical because of the current shortage but the reviews were legit. I bought the above product, it was in stock as promised, if they list it they have it, other sites don’t do that. It arrived quickly as promised and the Ammo works great. I will buy here again. God bless them.
