7.62x54r – 180 gr SP – Sellier Bellot (SB76254RB) – 400 Rounds

Most 7.62x54R on the market is surplus or steel-cased range ammo, which leaves Mosin-Nagant owners who want to hunt with few good options. This listing is Sellier and Bellot 7.62x54R 180 grain soft point ammo, MPN SB76254RB, sold as 400 rounds for deer and hog hunting with a military-pattern rifle.

Sellier and Bellot rates this load at 2,625 fps with 2,753 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, putting it in the same performance class as a 30-06 with a 180 grain bullet. The soft point bullet has exposed lead at the nose to start expansion, giving controlled mushrooming on deer, black bear, and wild boar. Unlike surplus ammunition, this load is built for hunting with a bullet designed to expand. It is overkill for plinking, where cheaper FMJ makes more sense.

This ammunition fits rifles chambered in 7.62x54R, including the Mosin-Nagant 91/30, M38, and M44, the Finnish M39, the Dragunov SVD and Tigr, the PSL, and modern sporting rifles chambered for the round. A common question is whether 7.62x54R is the same as 7.62×51 or 308. It is not. The 54R is a longer rimmed cartridge and the two are not interchangeable. Another common question is what bullet diameter Mosin bores need. Many Mosin rifles have bores that vary from about .310 to .314 inch, so accuracy differs from rifle to rifle and testing a few groups is worthwhile.

Sellier and Bellot SB76254RB is new production ammunition, not reloads, made in the Czech Republic. Unlike much surplus 54R, it uses reloadable boxer-primed brass cases with non-corrosive priming, so there is no need for the hot-water cleaning that corrosive surplus requires. This listing ships as 20 boxes of 20 rounds for a total of 400 rounds from one lot, enough to sight in several rifles and hunt for years. Store it cool and dry and it will stay reliable for many seasons.
