Overview of Hornady Ammunition

Founded in 1949 in Grand Island, Nebraska by Joyce Hornady with the mission of putting "ten bullets through one hole," Hornady has grown from a two-man bullet-making operation into one of the most innovative and widely trusted ammunition manufacturers in the world. The company produces more distinct ammunition lines than virtually any other manufacturer, covering everything from defensive carry handgun loads to varmint hunting to long-range precision competition to lever-action rifle performance. Every line carries the same commitment to ballistic innovation that has made Hornady the brand serious shooters reach for across more applications than any other single manufacturer.

Hornady's most significant product lines include Critical Defense and Critical Duty for defensive carry, ELD-X for long-range hunting, ELD Match for precision competition, V-MAX for varmint hunting, and LEVERevolution for lever-action rifles. Each line represents a distinct engineering solution to a specific shooting problem rather than a cosmetically differentiated version of the same product. Hornady Ammo by Product Line

  • Hornady Critical Defense: Designed for concealed carry in compact and subcompact pistols. The FTX bullet's flexible polymer tip prevents fabric clogging that causes inconsistent expansion in traditional hollow points. Available in 9mm 115gr FTX (90250) and across most common defensive handgun calibers including .380 ACP, .38 Special, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.
  • Hornady Critical Duty: Engineered for full-size service pistols and law enforcement applications where barrier penetration is required. The FlexLock bullet meets FBI protocol requirements through all test barriers including auto glass and plywood. Available in 9mm 124gr +P FlexLock (90216).
  • Hornady ELD-X (Precision Hunter): Long-range hunting loads built around the Heat Shield tip that resists aerodynamic deformation at high velocity, maintaining a consistent meplat and BC across the full flight path. Available in 6mm Creedmoor 103gr ELD-X and other precision hunting calibers.
  • Hornady ELD Match: Competition-grade precision loads loaded with the Extremely Low Drag Match bullet for maximum consistency at long range. Available in 6.5 Creedmoor 140gr ELD Match (81500), 6.5 Creedmoor 120gr ELD Match (81491), and .223 Rem 75gr BTHP Match (8026).
  • Hornady V-MAX (Varmint Express): Polymer-tipped varmint loads engineered for explosive fragmentation at high velocity. Available in .17 HMR 17gr V-MAX (83170) and across common varmint calibers including .22-250, .223, and .243.
  • Hornady Critical Defense 12 Gauge: 00 Buck with Versatite wad (86240) for consistent tight patterns in home defense shotguns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Hornady Critical Defense and Critical Duty?

Critical Defense is designed for concealed carry in compact and subcompact pistols, optimized for reliable expansion through clothing at the lower velocities produced by short barrels. Critical Duty is engineered for full-size service pistols and law enforcement use, with a FlexLock bullet that meets FBI protocol requirements through all test barriers. Critical Defense prioritizes expansion from short barrels; Critical Duty prioritizes barrier penetration from full-size platforms. Browse our full 9mm ammo selection to compare both lines.

What is Hornady ELD-X and how is it different from ELD Match?

Both use Hornady's Heat Shield tip that resists aerodynamic deformation at high velocity. ELD-X is a hunting bullet designed to expand reliably across a wide velocity range from close range to extreme distance. ELD Match is a competition bullet optimized for maximum accuracy and consistency rather than terminal expansion. ELD-X is for hunting; ELD Match is for targets.

Where is Hornady ammunition made?

Hornady ammunition is manufactured in Grand Island, Nebraska, where the company was founded in 1949. Hornady is privately held and remains family-owned and headquartered in Nebraska, making it one of the few major ammunition manufacturers still operating independently from the large corporate consolidations that have shaped the rest of the industry.

More About Hornady Ammunition

Joyce Hornady founded Hornady Manufacturing in 1949 in Grand Island, Nebraska, initially producing component bullets for the handloading market. The company's founding philosophy — "ten bullets through one hole" — established an accuracy standard that has guided product development for more than 75 years. Vernon Speer, who founded Speer Ammunition six years earlier in nearby Lewiston, Idaho, was an early collaborator, and the two companies shared equipment and knowledge in the early years of both businesses.

Hornady's most significant contributions to ammunition technology span several decades. The InterLock bullet, introduced in the 1960s, used a mechanical band to lock the jacket to the lead core, improving weight retention over conventional cup-and-core designs. The SST (Super Shock Tip) polymer-tipped bullet, introduced in the 1990s, delivered dramatically improved ballistic coefficients over conventional soft points by replacing the exposed lead tip with a polymer insert. The FTX bullet, introduced with the LEVERevolution line in 2006, solved a 150-year-old problem by producing a flexible polymer-tipped bullet that was safe in the tubular magazines of lever-action rifles while delivering the trajectory advantages of a spitzer bullet profile.

The ELD series, introduced beginning in 2015, addressed the aerodynamic tip deformation problem that had compromised high-BC polymer-tipped bullets at extended ranges. Hornady's research showed that plastic tips were deforming from aerodynamic heating during flight, changing the bullet's BC in flight and producing point-of-impact shifts. The Heat Shield tip, made from a thermally stable polymer, eliminated this effect and enabled the ELD-X and ELD Match bullets to maintain their rated BC from muzzle to target — a genuine advancement in long-range bullet technology that has since influenced the entire industry.

Hornady remains privately held and family-operated under Steve Hornady, Joyce's son, who has continued his father's commitment to ballistic innovation. The Grand Island, Nebraska facility continues to manufacture the full Hornady line domestically.
