Overview of Barnes Ammunition
Barnes is best known for pioneering all-copper hunting bullets. Its TSX and TTSX bullets expand into copper petals and typically retain nearly all of their weight, giving deep, straight penetration on deer, elk, and larger game. Barnes factory ammunition puts those bullets in loads tuned for hunters, along with match loads for precision shooters.
Because they contain no lead, Barnes copper bullets are legal in areas with lead-free hunting requirements, including California. Barnes bullets also appear in loads from other makers we carry, like Black Hills Gold with Barnes TSX and Federal with Barnes TSX.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Barnes ammo lead-free?
Barnes TSX, TTSX, TAC-TX, and LRX bullets are all-copper and contain no lead, which makes them legal in areas with lead-free hunting requirements. Check the specific load, since some match bullets use lead cores.
Why do hunters choose Barnes copper bullets?
All-copper Barnes bullets typically retain nearly all of their weight and expand into sharp copper petals, giving deep, straight penetration. Many hunters drop one bullet weight compared to lead-core bullets because copper bullets are longer for their weight and penetrate well.
What is the difference between Barnes TSX and TTSX?
TSX is an all-copper hollow point. TTSX adds a polymer tip, which improves ballistic coefficient and helps start expansion, especially at longer ranges and lower impact velocities.
More About Barnes Ammunition
Barnes began in 1932, when Fred Barnes started making bullets in Colorado. The company later moved to Utah, where it still makes its bullets and ammunition today.
In 1989, Barnes introduced the X bullet, the first widely successful all-copper hunting bullet. Its successors, the TSX and polymer-tipped TTSX, became some of the most trusted big-game bullets in the world and set the standard for lead-free hunting ammunition.
