More About 22 Hornet Ammo
22 Hornet grew out of experiments in the 1920s by Springfield Armory personnel, including Captain G.L. Wotkyns and Colonel Townsend Whelen, who loaded jacketed bullets in the black powder era 22 WCF case. Winchester adopted the design and introduced factory 22 Hornet ammunition in 1930, making it the first commercial American cartridge built specifically for small-bore, high-velocity varmint hunting.
The cartridge saw military use as the chambering for U.S. Air Force survival rifles, including the M4 bolt-action survival rifle and the M6 combination gun, carried by aircrews to take small game after a crash. That role suited the Hornet well: light, quiet, and effective on the animals a downed pilot would need to hunt.
Although 222 Remington and later 223 Remington took over much of the varmint market, 22 Hornet never went away. It remains popular with farmers, ranchers, and landowners who want centerfire range without the noise, recoil, and cost of larger cartridges, and it is still chambered in bolt-action and single-shot rifles from several manufacturers today.
