6mm Remington is a fast, flat-shooting .243-inch cartridge that pushes a 100gr bullet at about 3,100 fps. It is effective on varmints with light bullets and on deer and antelope with 100gr loads, much like .243 Winchester, but with a slight velocity edge thanks to its larger case capacity.

6mm Remington began life in 1955 as the .244 Remington, introduced the same year as .243 Winchester. Both were built on necked-down cases, with the .244 based on the 7x57mm Mauser. Remington designed the .244 as a varmint cartridge and gave its rifles a 1:12 twist, which worked well with light bullets but could not stabilize the 100gr bullets deer hunters wanted.
Winchester chose a faster twist for the .243, and hunters followed. By the time Remington responded, .243 Winchester had become the dominant 6mm cartridge. In 1963 Remington reintroduced the cartridge as 6mm Remington, with a 1:9 twist that handled 100gr bullets properly.
6mm Remington never caught .243 Winchester in popularity, but it earned a loyal following among hunters who appreciate its extra velocity. Factory ammunition is produced in smaller runs today, so buying in case quantities is the most reliable way to keep a season's supply on hand.
