Overview of Wolf Ammunition
Wolf Performance Ammunition is the most widely recognized steel-case ammo brand in the U.S. civilian market, built on a simple value proposition: affordable, reliable FMJ loads for high-volume range training in rifle and pistol calibers. Wolf ammo uses steel cases with polymer or copper-wash coatings for smooth feeding, Berdan primers, and bimetal jacketed bullets — a combination that keeps per-round cost well below comparable brass-case loads while delivering reliable function in the platforms it was designed for.
Two things every Wolf buyer should know before purchasing. First, Wolf ammo uses bimetal jackets containing steel, which means it will attract a magnet. Many indoor ranges prohibit steel-jacketed ammunition due to backstop wear concerns — always check your range's rules before buying. Second, Wolf's Russian-produced lines became unavailable in the U.S. following 2022 import sanctions. The Wolf loads currently available at BulkMunitions are non-Russian production. For a full breakdown of steel case versus brass, see our brass vs. steel ammo guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Wolf ammo still available after the Russia import ban?
Yes, in some calibers. Wolf Performance Ammunition is a U.S.-based brand that historically sourced most production from Russian manufacturers. The 2022 import sanctions ended that supply chain for Russian-produced Wolf loads. Wolf loads currently available at BulkMunitions are sourced from non-Russian manufacturers. Availability is more limited than before 2022 and pricing is higher, but Wolf-branded steel-case ammo continues to be produced. Will Wolf steel-case ammo damage my rifle?
For AK-pattern rifles, Wolf steel-case ammo is entirely appropriate. AK platforms were designed to run steel-case ammunition. For AR-15 and other semi-automatic rifles, Wolf is generally safe but may cause slightly accelerated extractor wear over very high round counts. Wolf does not recommend their Polyformance .223 for use in Smith and Wesson M&P 15 rifles specifically. For a full comparison of steel case versus brass, see our brass vs. steel ammo guide.
Why does Wolf ammo attract a magnet?
Wolf uses bimetal bullet jackets containing copper and steel, plus steel cases. Both components contain ferromagnetic material that attracts a magnet. This is why many indoor ranges prohibit Wolf and other steel-case, bimetal-jacketed ammunition. Most outdoor ranges and many indoor ranges allow it without restriction. Always check your range's rules before purchasing Wolf for indoor use.
More About Wolf Ammunition
Wolf Performance Ammunition is a brand operated by Sporting Supplies International (SSI), a U.S.-based distributor founded in 2005. Unlike Federal, Remington, or Speer, Wolf is not a manufacturer — it is a brand that sources production from third-party factories and sells under the Wolf label in the American market. From 2005 through 2022, the majority of Wolf production was sourced from Russian factories including Barnaul and Tula, which gave Wolf ammo its reputation for affordability and its association with Eastern European steel-case ammunition characteristics.
The brand built its civilian following primarily through AK and AR shooters who needed large quantities of affordable practice ammo, and Wolf became the go-to recommendation for anyone wanting to run their AK at volume without paying brass-case prices. The Polyformance line, featuring a polymer-coated steel case for smoother feeding and extraction, was the most widely distributed Wolf product in the AR-15 market.
The 2022 Russian import sanctions disrupted Wolf's supply chain significantly. Russian-produced Wolf loads disappeared from the U.S. market and availability tightened across all Wolf calibers. SSI has worked to source non-Russian production to maintain the Wolf brand's presence in the U.S. market, with varying availability by caliber. For shooters who relied on Wolf for affordable high-volume training, non-Russian alternatives including Barnaul, Sellier and Bellot, and PPU have filled much of the gap at comparable price points.
