Speer was founded in 1943 by Vernon Speer in Lewiston, Idaho, originally producing component bullets for handloaders during World War II when commercial ammunition was scarce. The company grew steadily through the postwar period, developing the CCI primer brand as a companion business and establishing Lewiston as a hub for American ammunition component manufacturing.
The Gold Dot line was introduced in 1990 using a new electrochemical bonding process that addressed the most persistent failure mode of conventional hollow point ammunition: core-jacket separation on impact. Earlier jacketed hollow points could shed their jackets under certain conditions, leaving an undersized lead core that penetrated too deeply without expanding.
