Overview of CCI Ammunition

Founded in 1951 in Lewiston, Idaho as Cascade Cartridge Inc., CCI is the most recognized name in rimfire ammunition in the United States. The company pioneered the Mini-Mag in 1962, setting the standard for high-velocity 22 LR performance, and followed with the Stinger in 1975, which redefined what was possible from a 22 LR cartridge at nearly 1,650 fps. Today CCI's rimfire lineup covers every application from subsonic target shooting to varmint hunting, and the Blazer line extends CCI quality to affordable centerfire handgun training. CCI primers are also the most widely used by American handloaders, trusted for their consistent ignition across every caliber.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CCI Mini-Mag and CCI Stinger?

CCI Mini-Mag is a standard high-velocity 22 LR load, a 36gr CPHP at approximately 1,260 fps from a rifle barrel. CCI Stinger is a hyper-velocity load using a lighter 32gr CPHP at approximately 1,640 fps, achieved through a slightly longer case and more powder. The Stinger will not chamber in all 22 LR firearms. Mini-Mag is the more versatile all-around load; Stinger is purpose-built for maximum terminal performance on varmints. For a detailed look at the Stinger, see our CCI Stinger review.

Is Blazer aluminum-case 9mm safe to use?

Yes, for the vast majority of semi-automatic pistols. Blazer Aluminum uses heat-treated aluminum cases with standard boxer primers and is safe and reliable in most 9mm handguns. The cases are not reloadable. One exception: Blazer Aluminum should not be used in carbine-style firearms with blowback mechanisms, where case-head separation can occur. For pistol range training it is a reliable and cost-effective option.

Will CCI Stinger work in my 22 LR firearm?

Not always. CCI Stinger uses a slightly longer case than standard 22 LR and will not chamber in firearms with tight chambers or short leades. Many revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, and some bolt-action rifles will not accept Stinger reliably. If your firearm is not confirmed Stinger-compatible, CCI Mini-Mag is the better choice for reliable function with high-velocity performance. More About CCI Ammunition

CCI was founded in 1951 by Dick Speer, brother of Vernon Speer who founded Speer Ammunition eight years earlier, in Lewiston, Idaho. The two companies operated independently but shared a geographic and philosophical proximity that eventually led to a close business relationship. CCI's early focus was on primers for handloaders, and CCI primers remain the most widely used reloading primers in the United States today, known for their consistent ignition and tight dimensional tolerances.

The Mini-Mag, introduced in 1962, was CCI's first major rimfire product and became the defining benchmark for high-velocity 22 LR ammunition. Its copper-plated hollow point bullet, reliable feeding in semi-automatic actions, and consistent velocity made it the standard against which other 22 LR loads are still measured. The Stinger, introduced in 1975, pushed the boundary of what was possible from a rimfire cartridge and remains the fastest standard-production 22 LR load more than 50 years later.

CCI is currently part of Vista Outdoor alongside Speer, Federal, and Alliant Powder, and continues to manufacture at the Lewiston, Idaho facility. The combination of CCI rimfire ammunition and Speer primers under one corporate umbrella makes the Lewiston facility one of the most significant small-caliber ammunition manufacturing sites in North America.
